If you have lived in Danville for more than a year, you already know that the third weekend in September is the one weekend the town gives itself permission to close its main street. What you might not know is how much has changed on the blocks around that closure in the last fourteen months, and how differently the day plays out when you plan around the new arrivals instead of the same three lunch spots you defaulted to in 2023.
The 2026 Danville Concours d'Elegance lands on Sunday, September 20, with the Tour d'Elegance running the day before. It is the same weekend it has always been. Everything else about how residents move through it has quietly shifted.
Two days, one street
The Tour d'Elegance is the Saturday half most casual attendees skip, which is a mistake if you have ever considered driving your own car in it. Check-in opens at 7:30 a.m. at Cole European in Walnut Creek, with a full gourmet breakfast on site and departures at 8:45 a.m. sharp for a scenic route into wine country, lunch, refreshments, and a raffle before the day wraps. The Foundation invites owners of anything from modern luxury to vintage exotics, which is a broader door than most Concours tours crack open.
Sunday is the public day. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Hartz Avenue transforms into a display of roughly 120 classic, sports-performance, and exotic automobiles, alongside wooden yachts, motorcycles, and vintage trailers. Admission is free, donations encouraged, with proceeds going to the Michael J. Fox Foundation and The Parkinson's Institute. The Foundation has raised more than $6 million across its history for Parkinson's research and patient care, which is the kind of number most East Bay street festivals do not put on the board.
The VIP Lounge, and whether $175 is the move
The VIP Lounge sits inside Mangia Mi. The pitch is straightforward: $175 per person buys you a shaded seat off the pavement, a buffet breakfast from 8 to 11:30 a.m. with bloody marys, mimosas, coffee, tea, and juice, and a lunch service from 12 to 3 p.m. with beer, wine, and soft drinks included. Space is limited and it does sell out. Whether the ticket earns its keep depends on your tolerance for standing in an unbroken 80-degree September afternoon on asphalt. If you have kids in tow, or someone in your group is Concours-curious rather than Concours-devoted, the Lounge is the difference between a two-hour visit and a full day.
The other reason to stay downtown
Here is what has changed since the last Concours: the restaurant slate on and around Hartz is not the same slate you remember. Four of the most notable spots in walking distance of the show either opened or reopened in the last fourteen months, which reshuffles the calculus of whether to drive home after the Race Car Parade or stay for dinner.

Albi's is the one worth planning around if your group skews large. Moufarrej grew up next door to what is now her restaurant, at her parents' former Incontro Ristorante, then cooked at Del Posto in New York and helped both Rich Table and Angler in San Francisco earn Michelin stars before coming home. The beer list leans local, with Cellarmaker, Original Pattern, Ghost Town, and Humble Sea rotating alongside Lebanese pilsener Almaza. The garden is engineered for exactly the kind of unhurried, warm-evening crowd that spills off Hartz around 4:30.
The Race Car Parade nobody warns first-timers about
The set-piece most residents underestimate is not the concours itself but the Race Car Parade, which runs down the middle of Hartz during the day. Vintage race cars to modern-era race cars, engines uncapped, moving slowly enough that you can see the driver's hands on the wheel. If you have a child who is sound-sensitive, plan accordingly. If you have a child who is not, position them near the curb about fifteen minutes before it starts.
Judging is handled by two distinct panels. The San Francisco Region of the SCCA judges road and race cars built up to 1999, one of the few SCCA regions in the country that still sanctions Concours events. The Ferrari Club judges most Ferrari road and race cars, unless the owner opts into SCCA judging for Ferraris built up to 1987. That last detail is the sort of thing you only learn by standing next to an owner explaining it to a stranger, which is roughly the texture of the whole afternoon.
The French phrase Concours d'Elegance translates to "contest of elegance." The Foundation's stated goal is to show Old Town Danville, meaning Hartz Avenue, at what it calls its annual finest. Whether or not that description holds up depends on the year. In 2026 it will hold up more than usual, because the storefronts backing the show are, for the first time in a while, roughly as ambitious as the cars in front of them.
If you are skipping the show entirely
Some residents take Concours weekend as a cue to avoid downtown. Fair. The Saturday alternative worth knowing about: the Danville Farmers' Market runs its usual Saturday morning slot, which is unbothered by the Sunday closure, and the Iron Horse Regional Trail is quieter than a normal weekend because the walkers who would normally be on it are downtown at the Tour d'Elegance breakfast. If you like the Village Theatre & Art Gallery at 233 Front Street, check the calendar in the week leading up. The Gallery is open Wednesday through Saturday, and the Theatre's programming schedule tends to lean into the weekend with performances that pair naturally with a walkable dinner nearby.
Why any of this matters after Sunday
The Concours has been an East Bay fixture long enough that it is easy to file it under "annual." What makes 2026 different is not the show itself. It is that the two-block radius the show occupies has been rebuilt underneath it. Albi's arrived in April 2026, Sushi Tamahime in May 2026, Chronic Tacos in August 2026, and Taverna Sorrentina replaced Isola Osteria at 100 Railroad with three chefs who spent years together at Locanda Ravello. That is a denser rate of turnover than downtown Danville has seen in a decade, and it is not the usual pattern of national franchises filling in behind local closures. Most of these are chef-owned or operator-owned by people who live or built their careers here.
The Concours brings a hundred thousand dollars of Napa wine, 120 rare cars, and a Race Car Parade to Hartz for one Sunday. The restaurants around it now give residents a reason to stay past 4 p.m., which is a small change with a large downstream effect on how the town uses its own downtown.
